Effects of aerial exposure on antioxidant defenses in the brown mussel Perna perna BABT
Almeida,Eduardo Alves de; Bainy,Afonso Celso Dias.
Investigations were carried out to evaluate the antioxidant defenses in digestive gland of mussels Perna perna held in air for 4 hours, exposed to air for 4 hours followed by submersion in water for 30 minutes, and constantly submerged for 4.5 hours. No differences were observed in CAT and GPx activities and in the levels of total GSH. Mussels exposed to air had significantly higher SOD activity, possibly related to a preparative mechanism of defense against oxidative stress during reoxygenation.

Evaluation of reflective painting of the roof and artificial ventilation on performance and carcass yield of broilers R. Bras. Zootec.
Passini,Roberta; Araújo,Maria Angélica Gonçalves de; Almeida,Eduardo Alves de; Yasuda,Vinícius Melo.
This study was developed with the objective of evaluating reflective paint on covering and artificial ventilation on performance of broilers (males and females). A randomized design with a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used, as follows: 2 external management systems (coverage with and without reflective paint), 2 internal management systems (with and without artificial ventilation) and 2 sexes (male and female), totalizing 8 treatments. A total of 480 1-day old chicks of the Cobb strain were distributed randomly, according to sex, to treatments. Each treatment consisted of 4 pens - two pens for males and two for females - with 30 birds each. Six birds/pen were sampled. The studies were conducted at IFG-Urutaí Campus. For the performance...

Prevalence of βS-globin gene haplotypes, α-thalassemia (3.7 kb deletion) and redox status in patients with sickle cell anemia in the state of Paraná, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Shimauti,Eliana LitsukoTomimatsu; Silva,Danilo Grunig Humberto; Souza,Eniuce Menezes de; Almeida,Eduardo Alves de; Leal,Francismar Prestes; Bonini-Domingos,Claudia Regina.
The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of beta S-globin gene (βS globin) haplotypes and alpha thalassemia with 3.7 kb deletion (−α3.7kb thalassemia) in the northwest region of Paraná state, and to investigate the oxidative and clinical-hematological profile of βS globin carriers in this population. Of the 77 samples analyzed, 17 were Hb SS, 30 were Hb AS and 30 were Hb AA. The βSglobin haplotypes and −α3.7kb thalassemia were identified using polymerase chain reaction.Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were assessed spectophotometrically. Serum melatonin levels were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to coulometric electrochemical detection. The haplotype frequencies in the...
